Animation

Lemon taught himself frame-by-frame animation in the winter of 2015 in order to apply to the prestigious California State Summer School for the Arts. Overjoyed to be accepted there, he threw himself into the four-week experience, exploring a wide variety of techniques including traditional animation, cell animation, stop motion, and cut paper animation. His animated short, Together, is a complete autobiographical story, for which he also composed and edited the music and sound effects. He also enthusiastically adopted the low-tech “zoetrope” technique of drawing an entire animated sequence on one sheet of paper, then quickly photographing and animating it on his phone. In the .gif animation process he pushed, altered and inverted colors, and posted the resulting loops on Instagram and Facebook. The zoetropes became a recurring theme that tell miniature animated stories within his paintings and drawings.
