"My name is Kevin Reynoso, and I have been working primarily in watercolor for about seven years. My work is rooted in abstraction, inspired by my urban upbringing, as well as surreal landscapes and still-life that explore stories, history, identity, and personal life events. These
two approaches allow me to express different aspects of my experiences, blending the emotional with the conceptual.
Abstraction plays a central role in my practice, influenced by the dynamic and ever-changing nature of the city environment where I grew up. There’s a rhythm to urban life that is unpredictable yet structured, full of energy, and this is something I try to capture in my abstract work. I am particularly drawn to the layers, textures, imperfections, & patterns of urban spaces
—the way things overlap and break down over time. Through abstraction, I am able to express the complexity of city life, translating the chaos and beauty into forms that feel alive and open to interpretation.
In contrast, my surreal landscapes and still life pieces allow me to explore more narrative- driven concepts. These pieces are inspired by stories, both personal and historical, and often reflect themes of memory, identity, and transformation. I like to think of these works as dreamlike interpretations of reality, where objects and environments take on symbolic meaning.
The surrealism in my work enables me to blur the lines between the familiar and the unfamiliar, creating spaces that feel both real and imagined. Identity is a recurring theme throughout my work. Coming from a culturally diverse immigrant household and densely populated urban environment, I have always been aware of the intersections of culture, community, and individual expression. My paintings reflect this negotiation of identity, exploring how personal experiences are shaped by larger cultural and historical forces. I see my work as a visual diary, where each piece represents a different aspect of my evolving sense of self.
Watercolor is the medium through which I express these ideas. Its fluidity and unpredictability mirror the way life unfolds, often in ways that are beyond our control. I am drawn to the way watercolor can be both subtle and bold, how it allows for spontaneity while also requiring a degree of precision. This tension between control and letting go is central to my creative process. I allow the paint to flow and settle in unexpected ways, embracing accidents and imperfections as part of the final composition.
Ultimately, my work is about capturing moments—those fleeting instances where something profound or meaningful can be felt but not easily articulated. Through both abstraction and surrealism, I aim to create a space where viewers can engage with their own memories and emotions, finding personal connections within the work. Art, for me, is about discovery, both of the self and the world around me.
